Not-for-profit housing provider, Pacific Link Housing, has completed the development of four new units to provide housing for some of those most in need in Cessnock.
The addition of the four new homes opened by Mayor Bob Pynsent and Pacific Link Chairman, David Bacon, follows a recent report by the Samaritans which found there were no affordable and appropriate rental properties for people on parenting payments, people with a disability, single aged people or young people on benefits in Cessnock.
Speaking at the opening this week, Cessnock City Mayor Councillor Bob Pynsent said he was pleased to see help provided to those in the community struggling to keep up with the rising cost of housing.“Today’s opening will go a long way to reducing the shortage of affordable housing we see in the Cessnock local government area,” Cr Pynsent said.
Now in its 31st year of operations, Pacific Link manages more than 60 homes for families and others at risk of becoming homeless in the Cessnock region.
“Our core business of housing the most vulnerable operates in an efficient and compassionate manner,” said Pacific Link Chairman, David Bacon. “The provision of housing with appropriate support services is essential to help tenants overcome disadvantage and, where possible, live independent lives.”
Built at a cost of $1.3 million, the new project has been fully funded, planned and developed by Pacific Link to help meet the urgent need for additional community and social housing – with two of the four new units designed to suit the needs of disabled tenants if required.
Pacific Link is a not-for-profit, government-approved, Tier 1 housing provider that currently manages more than 1000 properties throughout the Hunter and Central Coast of NSW.
Last month it received Australia’s top peer-group award for "Excellence in Tenant Engagement and Social Inclusion" at the national PowerHousing annual awards in Melbourne.
